When I work, my mind turns around Human Centred Design Thinking. First of all, a product has to be desirable enough for the end-user to use. It should tap into their needs emotionally and technically.
Secondly, it has to be feasible – both technically and organizationally. It’s important to ensure if the business has the necessary resources to execute and run the product and to be foresighted in terms of chosen technology.
Last but not least, it has to be viable. It should be financially possible to do and it should be something the business can get advantage from.
I work in four iterative phases to ensure that we make a product that fulfills the three aspects of Human Centred Design Thinking: identify, ideate, prototype, evaluate.
1. Identify This phase is used to identify the needs of the users and the client and analyze the market. Based on that, I create hypothesizes that can be validated or falsified before going into the ideation phase. Depending on the hypothesizes, I can choose different qualitative or quantitative methods to evaluate them. Specific tools I like to use in this phase: Business Model Canvas and Value Proposition Design.
2. Ideate Based on the hypothesis in the identifying phase, I can use my creativity to create meaningful concepts that can be realized in the prototyping phase.
3. Prototype In this phase, you can vary the fidelity of the prototypes. Usually, I start out with pen on paper sketches and end up with high fidelity clickable online prototypes later on in the project. The most important part of this phase is to make something that can be evaluated with the users in the last phase. Specific tools I like to use in this phase: Sketch and InVision.
4. Evaluate The last phase is used for validating and falsifying the hypothesizes once again. This means that you can exclude ideas and concepts from the previous iteration when starting on a new one.
